Wash Day Tips.
No matter how often you are washing your hair, I wanted to give you all a few tips on how to make Hair Wash Days your bitch.
It’s important to remember that every single day your scalp produces natural oils, your hair collects dirt & debris, & without knowing you probably touch your hair a lot through out the day.
Now, the basics of washing include the following items:
Water
Shampoo
Conditioner
You’re probably thinking, “Duh Abby we know that…” but I want to take those three things & break it down.
Water: Now I really have no rule on temperature of your water, only this, DO NOT use the temperature of Hell on your hair. The only person I know that can pull off intense heat on their scalp is Hades… I find that using warm water for the clients that need warmth is the perfect compromise temperature for washing your hair. Myself, I love to use either lukewarm, or cool water due to a lot of auto immune & inflammation reasons. The people who use the water temps from Alaska… I salute you cause your are totally bad ass, & if I could I would.
Shampoo: The purpose of shampoo is to clarify your scalp. Your scalp is the only part of your hair that is essentially (while thinking of Frankenstein) “ALIVE.” So therefore it’s crucial to make sure to cleanse your scalp thoroughly to knock out product build up, oils, dirt, sweat, maybe some leaves if you’ve been rollin’ around, or even cheetos from a late night binge session (raise your hand if you’ve been there..) This is why I recommend to my clients to shampoo twice. Especially, if you are a once or twice a week washer.
The first time is to break the barrier up all those above-mentioned items, & the second is to allow your shampoo to do what it needs to do, cleanse & clarify your scalp with no obstacles in its way. (Immediately thinks the song “I can see clearly now the rain is gone… really applies here.)
Conditioner: This is used after shampooing, which your scalp & hair have now been thoroughly “stripped” of its natural oils. Conditioner is all about hydrating & sealing in the moisture. Conditioner should not be applied to your freshly cleansed scalp, this will result in oily or weighed down hair.
You want to make a “ponytail” & apply your conditioner from where your scrunchie would be, to the ends. Then, once that is done I have a shower “wet brush” that I like to keep in the shower, & I GENTLY brush the conditioner through my hair. (Its crucial to do this gently, because your hair is in its most vulnerable state when its wet.) By brushing the conditioner through your hair it allows the conditioner to be evenly distributed through your hair, leaving no hair left behind.
The reason I make this blog post, is because I had NO idea about this washing technique til I was working in the industry, & I am finding that a lot of my clients, & other people do not know as well.
This method is universal for everyone, & if your hair begins to feel heavy, weighted down, or still oily, its most likely the types of Shampoos & Conditioners you’re using. This is when I would consult your Hairstylist about which Shampoo & Conditioner is the magical one just for you.
