we all start somewhere.
The other day, I was getting my hair done with my best friend. I always look forward to the days I get to sit in her chair because, let's be real, we both have opposite schedules, live on opposite sides of town, and can be total hermit crabs. It’s never gotten in the way of our friendship or our contradictory lives, but it does make the days I get to spend with her a whole lot nicer. We catch up, talk about our lives, & almost inevitably start to reminisce about the old days. Which, got me thinking about when I first stepped into the beauty industry.
It was 2015, & I had always loved going to the hair salon. I loved the hustle & bustle. I always thought hairstylists were the coolest people on earth. I was fascinated by before & afters, color theory, all of it. So, I began searching for a place to start… & got a job at a great salon as a Front Desk receptionist…
Wait, wait, wait, okay yes that’s all true but NOT what we are here for…
When I started learning & falling in love with the beauty industry I had NO idea what I was doing, basically every day, from morning to night.
What I mean is, I even had no idea how to brush my hair properly. Thankfully, one day when I was running very late to the salon, (I know that sounds dumb but stay with me..) I came in & started brushing, & blow drying my damp hair before the day began… turned around to see my Best Friend, & all the other Hairstylists staring at me in horror about how I was doing it…
Well, we all start somewhere, my Best Friend grabbed the brush & hair dryer & began to show me. She taught me how to hold the hair dryer, & use my brush to allow less heat damage on my hair, & over time it got easier. However, just like any topic, or activity you are learning it takes time. Time to learn about the concepts, time to learn what works for you, time to figure out how to apply it to your already crazy, intense, circus routine for the life your living.
So, give yourself patience, start out small with NO expectations, if you don’t statistics show you are less likely to succeed.
If you are trying to work towards healthy, happy hair, start small & build your way up.
Talk to your Hairstylist about beginning a beauty routine that won’t overwhelm you, but the easy steps to start.
My recommendation with My Clients is:
1.) Start with washing your hair. Why? Because it is the easiest change you can make, with a lot of opportunities to make it fun! I mean… I do hope you wash your hair consistently… otherwise, ew. (For my hair washing tips check out my last blog post or click here)
2.)After that, start with learning what shampoo & conditioner is perfect for you.
3.)Then spice things up with a good leave-in treatment to add in shine, moisture, & protection.
Don’t bite off more then you can chew. Otherwise, you will just become overwhelmed, & want to give up.
If you have mastered your hair washing routine, & looking for more of a challenge, start learning new ways to style your hair.
Learn how to properly blow dry your hair, what setting is best, & how to blow dry your hair effectively while protecting it.
Learn how to curl or straighten your hair with a hot tool.
Or like myself, learn how to style your hair more naturally to allow more flexibility, & varying hairstyles.
Just remember, we all start somewhere. Back when I was only working Front Desk I was amazed by just how much I didn’t know. Which was a lot considering I grew up in a home sharing a bathroom with two older brothers, & Suave Hair Shampoo & Conditioner… (Mom if you’re reading this, I still cringe a little.)
