Extensions vs. Summer 101.
If you read my blog post about Warmer Weather & Hair Care, this blog post is specifically about battling it out with Extensions vs. Summer.
Summer is full of barbeques, vacations & road trips, & water.
Now, I say a lot that I love extensions because although they are high maintenance, they allow me to live a low-maintenance life week to week. I only have to wash & style my hair once a week, & have princess hair… say less.
However, it is important to remember that extensions are still High Maintenance, & a Luxurious service. So they need a little more TLC in the warmer months.
First off, I always recommend starting off with getting a good professional conditioning treatment before the summer heat. The reason I say professional is, that extensions need specific treatments that won’t harm them. Better safe than sorry, & trust a professional with the best treatment for your extensions. See if you can find a good moisturizing treatment to take home & apply in between your hair maintenance sessions.
Another big recommendation, actually more like a big ole, red flashing, warning lights with that loud alarm to stay away from Sunscreens containing, Avobenzone & Octocrylene. These will destroy your extensions past the point of repair. They will turn an ugly pinky/orange color that can’t be fixed. Find a good mineral sunscreen that does NOT have both these ingredients. Here are a few of my favorites;
Reef Repair All Natural Sunscreen
Ditch the black hair ties… I really only use these now to adjust my clothes into cute crop tops… scrunchies & clips are my favorite. They not only are cute, but they also support the weight of my extensions without breaking my hair.
Also, don’t be afraid of the pool. The majority of the time I stay away from chlorine, but ever so often there’s really no better feeling than dunking my hair in the water, & living my true Little Mermaid life… I mean I’ve got the mermaid hair thanks to these extensions… I always recommend spraying a leave-in conditioner in your hair before jumping in. For this purpose, I really do love Incommon’s Magic Myst. Its lightweight, & truly smells like summer. I spritz this in my hair, & brush it through before I cannonball into the pool. Afterwards, I never fall asleep with my hair wet, from the shower, the pool, the lake, or the ocean. I go home & hop in the shower to rinse out the bacteria, chlorine, or minerals. My favorite hair care system is Malibu’s Swimmers Wellness Collection. My biggest piece of advice, shampoo twice! Then, make sure to spritz your leave-in, blow dry your extensions, specifically focusing on the tops of your wefts, & oil those babies up. My favorite hair oil is; Davines Oi Oil.
Lastly, make sure to thoroughly brush your hair as much as possible throughout the day. Save your money, head to your local TJ Maxx, Ross, or sometimes even Homegoods, & grab one for your purse, & car. Brushing your extensions will help keep your hair from dreading, & becoming tangled throughout the day. Your hair will thank you.
Just remember, extensions still are a High Maintenance & Luxurious service, protect your investment this summer so you can live your best mermaid life.
